BERT Testing for High-Speed Ethernet: Why Fibre Certification Is Only Part of the Test

Why BERT testing matters on high-speed Ethernet links
Fibre certification establishes the condition of the physical optical path, but a high-speed Ethernet link also needs to be assessed as a transmission system. Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT) can provide evidence of error performance under the conditions and test pattern specified for the application.
What is BERT testing?
BERT generates a defined data pattern and measures the received bit errors over the test interval. The result can be expressed as a bit error ratio or related error-performance measurement, depending on the equipment and test methodology.
Fibre certification versus transmission testing
OTDR testing, insertion-loss testing and optical return loss establish characteristics of the physical fibre path. BERT testing asks a different question: can the complete transmission path carry the intended data signal within the required error-performance limits?
A professional commissioning programme may therefore progress from inspection and fibre certification to optical characterisation and then high-speed transmission testing.
100G, 400G and 800G Ethernet testing
As Ethernet speeds increase, the test programme must reflect the optical modules, lane structure, transmission technology, and interface under test. The exact test configuration should be based on the equipment manufacturer's requirements and the project specification rather than assuming that one BERT setup applies to every interface.
What is FEC and why does it matter?
Forward Error Correction (FEC) allows a receiver to correct certain errors in a transmitted data stream. When testing modern high-speed Ethernet, FEC-related counters and error measurements can provide useful information about link margin and transmission performance.
A link can therefore appear operational while still showing error behaviour that deserves investigation. Test results must be interpreted in the context of the interface, FEC mode, and acceptance criteria.
BERT testing on Data Centre Interconnect links
High-capacity Data Centre Interconnect links can benefit from transmission testing after the physical fibre path has been certified. BERT can validate end-to-end optical transport and the Ethernet interface under the defined test conditions.
How BERT fits with OTDR, IL, ORL and CD/PMD
These measurements complement each other. OTDR identifies events along the fibre, insertion loss establishes attenuation, ORL assesses reflected power, and CD/PMD provides specialist fibre characterisation where required. BERT then assesses the transmission error performance of the complete test path.
For a broader fibre testing workflow, see bi-directional OTDR testing and CD/PMD Fibre Testing & Characterisation.
What should a BERT test report contain?
The report should identify the interface, test equipment, test configuration, data rate, pattern or methodology (where relevant), test duration, measured errors, FEC-related results (where applicable), acceptance limits, and project information.
FDNS high-speed Ethernet and BERT testing
FDNS provides High-Speed Ethernet, BERT & FEC Testing as part of a wider fibre and transmission testing capability. Testing can be combined with fibre certification, OTDR, ORL, CD/PMD, and other measurements, depending on network and project requirements.
Frequently asked questions
What is BERT testing?
BERT testing measures bit error performance by transmitting a defined test pattern and analysing errors received over the test interval.
Is BERT the same as OTDR testing?
No. OTDR characterises the physical fibre path and events, while BERT evaluates transmission error performance through the test path.
Why is BERT important for 100G and higher-speed Ethernet?
At high data rates, transmission performance depends on the complete optical and Ethernet system. BERT provides a controlled way to measure error performance against the applicable test requirements.
What does FEC tell you?
FEC-related results can provide information about corrected errors and transmission margin, depending on the interface and equipment.
Can BERT be used on Data Centre Interconnect?
Yes. BERT can form part of a DCI commissioning programme where high-speed Ethernet transmission needs to be validated after the physical fibre path has been certified.
